Some of our residents have asked questions regarding the proposed tax reform currently being considered atthe State level. The City is concerned with the proposal and feels that our residents will not be properlyserviced if the City must rely on the State to provide funding for local services. The following is informationabout the Florida Sate House of Representatives’ proposal in an effort for our residents to be fully informed:
House Bill PCB PBC 07-01 Proposes:
• The City will lose a minimum of 11 million dollars a year in funding.
• City resources and services such as roadways, parks and recreation services, police, fire, utilities, local transportation, social services, senior services, and more will be either cut or the charge for such services will be significantly increased and will leave the City with no other recourse but to bill our valuedresidents.
• Everyone, regardless of whether or not they are property owners or whether or not they live here, will pay an extra 2.5% sales tax on items purchased throughout the state. The State will have complete control over distribution of sales tax for the City and our residents and business partners. It will be left to the State to determine the financial needs of our community.
• The City of Hallandale Beach currently has one of the lowest taxes in the County with one of the highest levels of service. You will pay more in taxes on goods and services you purchase but will receive less from your local government which is currentlyneeded in our diverse and growing community.
• This will cause an increase in rents and expenses and a decrease in tourism and economic development.
• A 2/3 vote by the County Commission could add property taxes back on at any given time.
